Reforestation and Sustainable Development Project
Year: 2020 - 2025
Status: On Going
Overview of the Project
NCDC is implementing the five-year project entitled Reforestation and Sustainable Development Project (RSDP) in Nilkantha Municipality Ward No.1 Danda Basaha of Dhading District, Nepal. The project commenced on 1 April 2020 and is expected to complete by 31 March 2025. LichtBlick SE, a German-based energy supply company in Zirkusweg, Hamburg, has funded the project in close coordination with GEO, Germany.
The RSDP project activities are targeted at greening the local habitants with the specific goals of improving the general environment of the project catchment area in terms of prioritising plantation, reducing soil erosion and landslides. The project has also prioritised implementing various livelihood options such as health, drinking water and irrigation sectors, including the environmental literacy and social mobilisation processes within local periphery to enhance the effectiveness of the project. All the project activities are participatory with the close collaboration of the local communities towards enabling a green, clean, and prosperous village, and developing the local capacity and ownership to enhance their general knowledge and practices on and about the environment and its sustainability factors. Thus, NCDC is making every effort to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals through RSDP operating at the grassroots level and bridging the knowledge gaps of the general population on environmental issues, livelihoods, and sustainability.
Reforestation and Sustainable Development Project (RSDP)
Project area: Danda Basaha in Nilkantha - 1, Dhading district, Nepal
Funding agency: LichtBlick SE, Germany
German partner: GEO Rainforest Conservation (GEO)
Local partner: National Conservation and Development Centre (NCDC)
Duration: Five years
Period: 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2025
Project objectives
The main objectives of the project are to:
• Promote green coverage to improve soil, prevent erosion and landslides, improve water access, and
• Improve living conditions for the members of rural households in the Danda Basaha area.
The Project Area
The project area is Danda Basaha of Nilkantha Municipality Ward No.1 of Dhading District. The area lies at the elevation of 1200m to 1600m above mean sea level with an annual average temperature above 20oC. The project site in Nilkantha Municipality Ward No 1 of Dhading District lies in the middle hill region of Nepal. This area is considered one of the remote villages of Dhading District, Nepal although the district is situated in proximity to the Kathmandu valley in the Bagmati Province. The topography of the Dhading district stretched from the northern border of Chitwan and Makawanpur to join the Plateau of Tibet (China), representing diversified climate, vegetation, flora and fauna. The district extends from 27º 40' N to 28º 14' N Latitude and 84º to 85 º 1' East longitudes and is surrounded by the Gorkha district in the west, Kathmandu and Nuwakot in the east, Makawanpur and Chitwan in the south, and Rasuwa district in the north. Generally, the climate of Nilakantha municipality is characterised by sub-tropical types, and it is mild and temperate. However, some basins and valleys in the southern regions experience tropical climate types in the summer.
The project site is one of the most backward areas in Dhading district, with access to underprivileged infrastructure development such as roads, drinking water, irrigation, health facility, and education. This Ward represents an abysmal percentage of the population having access to clean drinking water, basic hygiene and sanitation facilities, education, health services and employment opportunities.
Target Group
The RSDP project area converges four small, isolated communities of Nilkantha Municipality Ward No.1. The target group comprises 184 households with a higher representation from Gairi Basaha (40%) and a lower representation from Sawanepani (11%) areas.

Based on an average household size of 5.5 members in the vicinity, the project beneficiaries are mostly subsistence farmers. A cursory review of the village-level profile of Danda Basaha Village and its surrounding localities envisage a compelling socio-economic status where the majority of these HHS are living in a deplorable socio-economic condition that significantly lacks a fair share of basic education, employment opportunities, primary health care and general well-being, thereby ultimately putting increased pressure on the local level biodiversity and the environment.
